How Do I Handle an Accommodation Request?
Students who need accommodations should be registered with their school’s disabilities office. Accommodations are negotiated on the student’s behalf by this office. Accommodation details are provided to the instructor, who must meet the requirements of the letter, and has a legal obligation to do so.
If you receive a request from a faculty member or an instructor for student accommodations, please forward it to the ELAM assigned to the partner institution. Since these requests may have an impact on other courses and may require additional resources, it is important that you forward these to the ELAM to manage and coordinate the required response and work needed. The ELAM will work with the partner to determine if the student may or may not have similar requests for other courses.
The ELAM will work with the partner to determine how we best meet the request. This may include the faculty working with their school’s support services or resources; for example, a prerequisite course not supported by Orbis would need to be accommodated by the partner’s support services. In addition, the ELAM will work with the ID to determine potential impact of the request on other courses to be proactive and ensure the student’s needs are met throughout all of their courses in a timely manner.
